Top 5 Safety Tips for Halloween

All my life I can remember hearing horror stories about candy that had poison and apples with razorblades. Every year the hospitals were rumored to be x-raying candy free of charge and police were on standby to find the sickos in the neighborhoods that were a threat to us kids. However, the reality is I’ve never met a person that this has happened to and over the past 30-something years I’ve never had it happen to me or my kids. Every year though I still sit down and inspect our children’s candyp; however I think the real dangers of Halloween can be fixed by simply staying safe.

On average, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year.

Here are the Top 5 Safety Tips for Halloween to ensure your child doesn’t become a statistic.

The Top Tips

  1. Use reflective tape and sticker on costumes and bags if possible so that they can be seen easily. Try face pain instead of masks so they can see as well.
  2. Have kids use glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
  3. Children should be with adults and if they are mature enough to be without supervision, remind them to stay relatively close to home or in familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.
  4. Be sure to abide by the hours in your area for trick-or-treating. Usually the hours are 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
  5. Choose costumes that are the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Here is a bonus safety tip:

Walk, don’t run. Running in the dark, with a costume, just isn’t the safest thing a child can do. Encourage your child to take his or her time and use walkways and crosswalks.  Ensure they practice the same rules of looking both ways, walk facing traffic, staying on the sidewalks.

Enjoy Halloween this year, be safe, and feel free to send me all your Mary Janes.
