Live a Little: Eating Outside Our Box

To “Live a little” means different thing to different people.  I can mean different things to the same person given a specific time.  Last week “live a little” encompassed spending time with my children enjoying the weather.  Today “live a little” means to try new and different foods from different cultures.  Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations is one of my favorite adventure foodies and although he is a tad weirder I do like Andrew Zimmern as well.  I’ve always been a firm believer when it comes to trying new foods.  Keeping an open mind has led me to find some of my favorite foods such as Ikura (raw salmon eggs) and Dinuguan (blood soup from the Philippines).

I’ve also tried foods that were not my favorite such as Durian (stinky fruit that tastes like rotten onions missed with spoiled strawberries).

Last month we decided to try fermented Duck Eggs.  There is no way to transfer smell via this post, but you wouldn’t be too far off it you just used your imagination.  With that being said, if you can get outside of your own head the eggs aren’t really that bad.

To Live a little I have been able to step outside of my box through food and in return I have learned a lot about other countries cultures.  Someday if I get lucky enough to  find cheap flights to Malta I will try some of their delicacies as well! It is an experience my entire family shares and one we try to share with others.

What foods have you had that made you Live a little?

  1. Lisa you have inspired me…now can you do the same for my picky eaters?? LOl I will say that if I really want to Live a Little, I will have some of my favorite Greek food or some Talenti orgsnic frozen yogurt…mmmm. Stepping outide of the box is never easy for me with food but I promise to keep it in mind this week. 🙂

  2. Oh my goodness… I’ve thought I’m adventurous eater.. but YOU win!

  3. You were very brave!

  4. I love this! I am not quite that adventurous with food and I love that this is what living a little is to you.

  5. Maybe the most adventurous I’ve been to eating was going Persian. I couldn’t get myself to eating durian, too. The smell just puts me off. You’re so brave!

    • I don’t think I have ever tried Persian food. Recommendations? By the way, we never brought the durian into the house, we ate it on the porch.

  6. Wow, I also tried Dinuguan and Durian a few years back. My friend said that he can sense I bought the fruit from 50 meters away!

I find the candied Durian less of an annoyance than fresh one. However, the fruit is tasty either way.

  7. Thanks Lisa for liking our native delicacy, Dinuguan or blood soup is much better when the main ingredient is the intestine of a pig instead of normal meat. so true that Durian fruit is stinky but in the inside it so sweet and tasty. in the place where I use to live. this fruit is so much expensive. here is some suggestion I can give try eating one we called Balut or raw duck egg.

  8. Your such a brave kind of person eating this kind of food..I dony like eat this fruits the smell really bad..

I love Filipino food but have never tried Balut although I would like to. I have also tried chocolate covered grass hoppers.

  10. I love embracing new cultures, but I am clearly not as adventurous in the stinky food department. But I love the concept of your post. As a child I would hold my nose walking through a zoo. At least I have evolved as an adult I simply breathe through my mouth, ha. If I am served something new and not told specifically what it is, if the aroma is okay, I’ll try it. Sometimes I end of liking it.

  11. Hi Lisa!
I’m a fan of Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern too! They are too courageous men whose not afraid in trying unusual food. But I know Mr. Bourdain don’t eat “Durian”. Have you tired the “Balut”? It’s a duck egg, fermented for at least a week, it is almost the same with the photo above but t’s not black. There’s a fetus of a duck inside it, and that actually you are going to eat! It’s delicious! Balut is also considered as aphrodisiac.

  12. Once, about 5 years ago, I’ve tasted snails. It was in France, we were on vacation, and we decided to give it a try. Anyway, they taste quite good, although they look a little bit disturbing for me.

  13. This is a very interesting post! i like watching the tv show of Andrew Zimmern. Because of the exotic food that he introduces to other people. Thanks and i’m looking forward to read more from you!

  14. I love watching Anthony’s and Andrew’s out of this world adventure in foods. Whew! I don’t think I can eat that Durian fruit. It really stinks!

  15. This kind of fruits I don’t like the smell..Even the taste its really bad..
