Visit Ireland’s Oldest City – Waterford

Ireland has more to offer than Dublin, and the ancient city of Waterford is a perfect example of that. Alright, it’s not quite ancient, technically, but considering Viking raiders first established a settlement near Waterford in 853, and founded the City in 914 AD, it’s safe to say it’s very, very old. Luckily, the Travelodge Waterford hotel isn’t quite that old, and has the modern trimmings for a truly comfortable and affordable stay.

The Viking heritage is something that anyone visiting the city will want to explore. Luckily, Reginald’s Tower is home to an exciting exhibition that uses a superb collection of historic and archaeological artefacts to tell the story of Waterford’s Viking past – a must-see for all history buffs and anyone interested in the roots of this wonderful city.

The culture vultures among you might be interested in SOMA Contemporary – an art gallery that began in 2009 as a community art led space. The start of summer 2012 saw the space open its doors to the public, meaning art-lovers could come and see what was going on for themselves. Rarely do you get to see such a fledgling local project, and this is an ideal opportunity to do so.

All this history and art will have got you hungry, no doubt, so it’s lucky that you’ll be in a city that’s proud of its culinary achievements. Harlequin Cafe and Wine Bar is rated highly for a reason, with wholesome local and international dishes, served with a smile and for a great price, it’s no wonder it’s a locals’ favorite. Restaurants in Waterford often offer fantastic value with many offering ‘early bird’ or special menus throughout the week. Look out for special deals.

Once you have finished exploring the wonders of Waterford City, there is still plenty to see and do. Beyond the City, you’ll find wonderful sandy beaches hugging a spectacular coastline in the Copper Coast UNESCO European Park. Stop for a pint in the little quaint little villages scattered along the coast before heading back to Waterford for what will be, after sampling everything there is to offer, a fantastic nights sleep.
