Depending on how long you’ve been out of work, you may be desperate to find new employment. Your bills may start to pile up, and if your unemployment benefits will end soon, you need to do whatever it takes to find a job.  You can never have enough tips and tricks for job interviews.

Although you cannot make an employer hire you for a position, simple actions can help you secure employment faster. Too often, job applicants attend interviews without prepping themselves for the meeting. But employers are picky, and if you or your application doesn’t scream “professionalism,” they might move onto the next applicant.

Don’t let desperation cloud your good judgment. Here are five tips  and tricks for job interviews to help you ace an interview.

1. Know the company. If you’re completely clueless about a particular company, this will show during the interview. The employer may ask, what do you know about our company? If you’re unable to answer this question, the employer will take note. If another applicant does his homework and provides a satisfactory answer, the employer may hire this person for the position. Before an interview, learn basic background information about the company. What is the company’s product or service? Is the company national or regional? Who is the president?

2. Improve your resume and cover letter. You can have a basic resume, but take time to tailor each resume with information specific to each position. In other words, if applying for an administrative assistant position, this isn’t the time to focus on your previous job as a baker. Employers need to know why you’re a good match for the position in question. Thus, they don’t need a rundown of every position you’ve held over the past 20 years. Be specific, clear and concise. Proofread your resume and cover letter multiple times to avoid misspellings and grammatical errors.

3. Arrive early. If an employer schedules your interview for 10:00, don’t arrive at 10:05. Being a few minutes late may set the tone for the interview. Even if the employer doesn’t greet you, the receptionist may take note of your arrival time and forward this information to the employer. To be on the safe side, arrive about 10 minutes early. Being punctual shows that you respect the employer’s time.

4. Dress professional. Maybe the dress code for a particular company is relaxed and casual. Even so, you shouldn’t dress overly casual for your interview. Business attire is appropriate – perhaps a suit, slacks, a button-down shirt, a skirt and dress shoes. If you have piercings in places other than your ears, remove these before your interview. Additionally, use body makeup to cover visible tattoos.

5. Check your online reputation. Your friends aren’t the only ones who may view your social media profiles. During the interview phase, it’s not uncommon for employers to conduct online background checks. A negative online image can turn off an employer, however, Reputation.com private communications company can help. This company will manage your Internet reputation, thus allowing you to look your best from an employer’s standpoint.

In a competitive job market, you need an edge. This can determine whether it takes weeks, months or years to find a new job. The job search can be discouraging, but don’t give up. Give each and every interview your all and you will secure a position.
