The Business of Blogging

Disclosure: This post was inspired and sponsored by Domain.ME, the provider of the personal domains that end in .ME. As a company, they aim to promote thought leadership to the tech world. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

personal branding

Are you thinking about starting a blog? The business of blogging has certainly grown over the past decade. I wish there was as much information when I started blogging available as there is today. When I started my first blog I think I made every mistake there was, including choosing my personal domain name. I wasn’t always Life with Lisa. My very first blog of Mom of 2 Boys, Wife of 1 at http://momof2boyswifeof1.blogspot.com and what a nightmare that was because not only was it not easy to spell, but it was way too long and it didn’t match what I had in mind for my personal branding at all. I just thought I had to figure out a witty mom blog sounding title, but deep down I must have known I was making a mistake because none of my other social networks were ever created with that name. I used “lisasamples” for nearly everything else. If I had it to do over again I would have named my blog LisaSamples.ME or LifeWithLisa.ME. Domain.ME offers highly valuable, reserved premium domain names, which naturally create calls-to-action and catchy marketing messages due to their memorability and meaning.

Why use a .ME address?

.ME is uniquely positioned to provide you with the space you need to build your personal brand and create a captivating online persona that’s a direct reflection of you. .ME domains are great for personal websites, such as blogs, online portfolios, or aliases for social network profiles.

Once you have established your brand and you set up your blog it’s time to monetize and turn your hobby into a business. For me that happened about 3 months after I set up Mom of 2 Boys. I slowly started reaching out to brands and did some reviews. I worked hard at reaching out to brands and PR and building relationships with companies I loved like Ford, Kraft, Best Buy, P&G, and more. Over time and as my blog grew I starting doing some affiliate work with Amazon and eventually I reached out to one or two brands that “fit” with my personal brand. I started my blog in 2008 and by 2010 I was able to quit my FT job and work my blog as a FT business. Granted, I made a lot of mistakes but with hard work and dedication turning your blog into a business is not impossible.

It all makes sense now. I love the idea of creating a unified personal brand built around the .ME domain. I think it’s great for brand relationships too because the .ME leaves you open to so many creative ideas!
