DROP 5 LBS WITH GOOD HOUSEKEEPING: Healthy Snack Recommendations

Melissa d’Arabian is the host of Drop 5 Lbs with Good Housekeeping on the Cooking Channel and she recently took some time out of her busy schedule to answer some questions that the member of Fabulous Transformations, an online Facebook group of men and women looking to become #Fabin13.  Many of the questions they had centered around snacking and Melissa had some great advice for the group:

“How do I handle the “need a snack” issue? What healthy but yummy snacks can you recommend?”

I try to stick to a few simple snacking tips whether I’m running around with the kids, working on a deadline, or on the road:

o   Always be prepared. I keep a small bag of raw almonds and protein bars with me at all time– great option to turn to when you are stuck in a meeting, at an airport, waiting for the kids at after school activities, anywhere. And, stock your pantry with healthy options in advance. In the end, we eat what’s in front of us most of the time and it Not only does it take the same amount of time as it does to fill it with unhealthier counterparts.

o   Set yourself up for success. A tiny bit of preparation can really go a long way in healthy snacking. Bake up some healthy muffins like these Morning Glory Muffins and Fruit & Veggie Cupcakes on the weekend to stick in the freezer, for instance.  Then you have some instant healthy “fast food” for those crazy busy mornings!

o   Go green – and nutritious! One of my favorite “Drop 5 Lbs” recipes is the Guiltless Guacamole , which cleverly adds creamy white beans to the classic recipe for a fiber and protein-filled treat. Pair it with fresh raw veggies (carrots, celery, and even jicama) for a filling snack. I also love making a big bunch of Kale Chips for a crunchy and satisfying snack.

o   Be aware when on the road. When I’m traveling, I eat raw produce at every meal and snack because I know I can always find an apple or a few carrots to round the meal out. So, even if I’m forced into something slightly less healthy, I pair it with a healthy option, which means I’m satisfied with much less.
