Got Milk? My Mommy Role Model

As part of the Milk Mustache’s Role Modeling Campaign I want to share with you today a little about my role model growing up and about my responsibility to my children to be a role model for them.  When I was young it was only natural for our role models to be the people closest to us.  We didn’t do TV like children do today and I remember there were many years when we didn’t even own a television.  Our focus was family and being active outdoors and my parents were not big advocates of planting ourselves in front of a television for hours.  I believe I truly benefited from that because it gave me a lot of time to learn many valuable things from my mother and grandmother.

The things my mother taught me are the things that any good role model will pass along such as be kind, be truthful, be caring, and the list goes on.  In my life time I don’t think I ever met anyone who didn’t like my mom because she led by example.  There were other important life lessons she tried to pass on such as the importance of an education.  When I grew up quitting school wasn’t even an option.  I believe my mom was so good at this because her role model was my grandmother.  In all honesty, my grandmother was the closest thing to a Saint that I have ever experienced.  She raised my mother and her brother on her own ever since they were very young and she taught my mom how to be a mom…just like my mom taught me how to be a mother.

Being a role model for my children was a little different as things have changed since my childhood.  The technology developments of today sometimes make it more challenging for parents to be role models today.  Children seem find their role models through television, movies and sports today instead of  through family.  With all this in mind I try to live my life in a positive way to set a good example for my boys.  I believe I am pretty successful at some things and maybe no so successful at others.  One important thing I try to teach my children is that nothing will ever be handed to them and that education is not an option for them.  While both my sons were young I was putting my self through college and at the age of 42 I graduated Magna Cum Laude.   If my children want something they know they have to work for it and you never give up.  I also make sure to treat other’s with respect, to be honest, and all the other things my mom taught me growing up.

Very nice post and a tribute to Mothers and Grandmothers.

  2. Milk is important – problem is – what we get in store these days can hardly be called that. Not only it is processed from powder – it is packed with things that normally don’t belong there.

  3. Great post and video. Thanks for your sharing
