Come Join TheMotherhood And TruMoo As We Discuss School Lunch Nutrition

When I was in elementary school my fondest memories were that of being chosen to take the orders and get the milk for my class.  The choices were white or chocolate and we kept a tally on a piece of paper that we carried proudly through the halls to the lunch room.  Once we arrived we got in a special line with our milk crate and counted out just the right amount of each to bring back to the class.  It was always an honor to be the milk fetcher.

Lately there has been a great amount of debate over schools offering chocolate milk.  Some say it is ‘soda in drag’ while others complain that it is causing our children to become obese.  Some schools, including Los Angeles Unified School District, have already banned both chocolate and strawberry flavored milk from their schools.  What do I believe?  It depends.  It depends on what kind of chocolate milk they are offering – in my opinion.  For instance, TruMoo milk is all natural white milk from local dairies mixed with cocoa and table sugar.  There are no corn syrups or other additives in the milk and after giving a bottle to my 7 year old (with ADHD) this past weekend I saw no hyper outburst.

Keep in mind, I’m not a doctor.  I don’t know all the answers to this and other child related questions that surround this topic.  However, tomorrow, August 31st at 1pm EST I will be joining a group of moms (and hopefully you) to talk with Andrea Carrothers, MS, RD and Nutrition Communications Manager at Dean Foods.  Andrea will offer us tips on how to encourage healthier eating at home and at school and she will demystify the chocolate-milk-in-schools debate playing out on TV and in school meetings from coast to coast.   I’m really excited to hear what she has to say about all this and would love it if you could be there too to share your views.

  6. Great post! It’s great to know that good nutritious foods are out there for our children. It’s so awful that corn syrup and artificial sweetners can be found in most foods out there. Rada
