I remember when my oldest son was growing up trying to find a sport that he was interested in playing. It wasn’t easy because from a very early age he just didn’t have any interest in sports. He did one year of t-ball but he just never really liked it. He did, on the other hand, LOVE computers and video games. I finally realized that he just wasn’t going to ever be a professional football player or the next Kobe Bryant and my husband (his stepfather) decided to join him on a new journey by putting his black belt to use and becoming an instructor. What better way to inspire your young athlete than to join them become part of the journey, so together they bonded through martial arts.
As a parent it is important to remember that athletes come in all shapes and sizes and what interests one young athlete might not fit another. However, there is potential in all of us. No matter what you achieve in life, you start in the same place as everyone else: as a kid full of potential and big dreams. At the end of the day, we are all “just a kid” from somewhere.
