The Boxtrolls Are Coming!

On September 26th, in theaters across the country The Boxtrolls are coming!   I believe this is going to be the family movie of the year.  Not only are the characters adorable (they gurgle!), but the underlying messages in the movie are just what we need today.  There are so many different facets of this plot that will touch nearly every family.  Not only will this movie empower kids to use their imagination, but it encourages them to be creative and to build things. Let’s back up….

The movie is about a family, The Boxtrolls.  They live underneath the streets of a town called Cheesebridge.  These little quirky and mischievous characters end up raising an orphaned human boy they name Eggs (he is named after his sticker on his box).  Although The Boxtrolls are harmless, the evil villain of Cheesebridge devises a plan to destroy them. Eggs takes it upon himself to explore above ground to try to help his family where he meets a feisty character named Winnifred, the daughter of the mayor.  This is the adventure of the teamwork and collaboration it takes to save a family…

Leading up to this movie there are some fun things you can do with your kids to get them excited about it too.

Fun Family Boxtrolls Activities

  1. Find a cardboard box and cut out openings for their arms and head.  On the front of the box have fun either (a) coloring a picture  or (b) find a photo in a magazine that he/she identifies with.  Each of the Boxtrolls takes on the identity of the box they are made out of, for instance Egg’s called eggs because his box has a photo of an egg carton on it.
  2. Make up your own Boxtroll language and mannerisms.  The Boxtrolls have unique modes of verbal and physical expression such as gurgles and banging on boxes.  Have fun with your child and be goofy and imaginative.
  3. The Boxtrolls love to recycle the unwanted things from the town of Cheesebridge and make them into beautiful useful items for their home.  Find an old frame or other object you have laying around and repurpose it.  Talk to you child about the importance of using their imagination to see the beauty in everything.
