The Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative hopes to #endALZnow!!!

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month. As the month comes to a close I think now is a perfect time to discuss the Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative. Alzheimer’s is a debilitating, irreversible, and devastatingly scary disease. Anyone who has personal experience can surely attest to this. I haven’t had anyone in my family suffer from it firsthand but I have known people who have lost relatives and loved ones. This disease will eventually take everything from those that suffer from it and right now there is no cure. The thought of completely losing one’s mind is utterly terrifying. There is no way to prevent this disease either but there is an organization who is headed in this direction and they need your help.

Alzheimer’s diagnoses are on the rise with 5.2 million American currently affected by the disease.  Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the US and believe it or not there is someone diagnosed with the disease every 68 seconds! Alzheimer’s is in fact the only top ten cause of death in the US that CAN NOT BE PREVENTED, TREATED, OR CURED. The Alzheimer’s Prevention Initiative is currently growing an online community of healthy people over the age of 18 who are passionate about combatting Alzheimer’s and may hopefully participate in prevention studies. It all starts with research and right now it is hard to find participants!

In order to advance research, researchers have to screen 10-20 times more people than needed to enroll in clinical trials. The initiative needs A LOT more people than what they have right now. Research must include people who are not afflicted with the disease as well as those suffering from Alzheimer’s.
