New Years Eve: Protect Your Identity, Your Credit & Yourself

2013

As you prepare for the New Year remember to protect yourself.  It’s amazing how many times you will reach into your purse or wallet on New Years Eve to pull out your credit or debit card.  Are you being cautious?  Identity theft and credit card theft doesn’t stop just because it’s the end of the year.  During the holidays is the prime time to become a victim – so be prepared!

Other than the  great tips found in the LifeLock for Life sweepstakes there are some other things you can do to protect yourself while bringing in the New Year.  Here are a few suggestions:

  • Change your PIN.  We change our passwords all the time (or at least we should be changing them) so why not change your PIN codes on your credit and debit cards?  Now is a good time!
  • Going away to celebrate?  Have a neighbor or friend drop their car off for a visit while you are gone.  A vehicle parked in the driveway is a great deterrent.
  • Keep a photo copy of your credit cards at home in the safe – front & back.  If your card is stolen it is much easier to pull out the replica for information.
  • Check your credit card statements after a “big night out” to ensure all the charges are your own.

We are members of LifeLock and one of our favorite features is the ID Threat Detection & Alerts.  We get a call whenever there is suspicious activity like a new credit application using our personal information.  Last month we got two calls but luckily the activity was legitimate.  I feel protected against credit applications done fraudulently using our information because I know they monitor our accounts closely.  However, just because we are LifeLock members doesn’t mean we don’t have to take precautions.  Always remember to be safe when accessing your personal information and your credit cards in public places!

Bring in the New Year with a little peace of mind.

  3. All the time safety is a must. So we have to be most careful in the time of any vacation. Thanks for the ideas of safety. These are amazing to protect ourselves to the thief. We must have to copy our credit / debit cards (both sides), driving license for easy and quick replacing.
