Is your neck killing you? It could be…
Anyone that knows me also knows how much of a pain in the neck I can be. I may not be able to go back and change the past but maybe I can help you if you are experiencing neck pain by teaching you how to massage your neck and get professional results.
No matter what you do for a living, whether you sit in an office all day or stand on your feet, your neck muscles are always having to hold your head up. Regardless of the size and density of your head, simply sitting upright puts strain on your cervical muscles which over time can become inflamed and require some sort of intervention.
Next time you feel like a tension headache is coming on and your neck muscles feel tight, this simple three step process should help you with that.
Step One: Interlock your fingers
Step Two: Place your hands behind your neck (Assume the position)
Step Three: Gently press your thumbs into your neck muscles
I like to start at the base of the skull behind the ear and work my way toward the middle holding pressure for a minimum of 30 seconds in each spot.
After working the base of the skull I usually work my way down the middle of my neck.
After holding pressure along the base of the skull and working down my neck I usually go back to where I started and start making circles with my thumbs as I press them in into the musculature.
Afterwards, I like to finish with some light stretches.
Now that you know how to give yourself a massage pass it on to someone else!
For those with medical conditions please consult your doctor before beginning your massage. If you have cervical issues skip the stretches and consult your doctor to make sure massage wont exacerbate your condition!
