The 5th annual National Park Trust Kids to Parks Day will take place May 16 at local and national parks all over the U.S. For some kids this is one of the few times they get to enjoy nature and the great outdoors. All over the US teachers, caregivers, parents and friends are pledging to bring a child to a park on this special day. All you have to do to participate is get outside in a local or national park. If you register for the event you’ll also be entered to win a Nikon COOLPIX L830 camera!
Being active is important for kids today and taking a break from TV, computers, phones, and all the other technology that makes our children less active can be fun. I think it is our responsibility to show our kids how Active Kids are Healthy Kids. I’m not the most active persona in the world and it’s my job to make sure my children don’t suffer because of it. Did you know that the obesity epidemic touches nearly 1 in 3 children? No wonder why cities across the nation are encouraging their residents to use Kids to Parks Day as the first of many days spent outdoors, at local parks and recreation sites, to develop more active, healthy lifestyles.

Last year, there were more than 447,000 participants in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. This year, the goal is to have more than 500,000 people enjoy Kids to Parks Day. The Kids to Parks Day has been endorsed by America’s State Parks, American Academy of Pediatrics, American Hiking Society, Boy Scouts of America, Children & Nature Network, Children’s National Medical Center, Department of Interior’s Youth in the Great Outdoors, National Education Association, National Environmental Education Foundation, National Geographic Kids, National Parks Hospitality Association, National Recreation and Parks Association, National Wildlife Federation, Ready Set Wear It!, US Play Coalition, US Army Corps of Engineers, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let Move Outside! Initiative, half the nation’s governors, and many more.
If you can’t make it to a National Park then enjoy your local parks! There has to be somewhere you can experience the great outdoors in your neighborhood. You can find fun Activity Guides, Buddy Bison Tips and More here.
