Durian Fruit – Try Something New – Breaking Out of My Routine

There are a couple television shows I watch religiously.  Bizzare Foods with Andrew Zimmerns is one of them.  I love watching him eat bugs, mold, and body parts that no other human would consume.  When he finds something that is disgusting it really stands out to me because for the most part he likes almost everything.  Last year he did a show featuring foods from southeast Asia where he tried a durian fruit (also known as stinky fruit).   Have you ever heard about this? It is actually illegal in some Asian countries to eat it indoors in some public locations because of the offensive smell.  Well, Andrew hated the durian and it almost made him throw up.   He was utterly disgusted with not only the offensive, rotten smell, but by the taste.

On occasion I will try something new and break out of my normal routine of eating “safe” foods because I saw that Andrew tried it.  I’ve discovered a lot of really delicious things this way…however, durian was not one of them.  So, does it look disgusting? Well, verdict has it that it is pretty gross. The consistency is that of custard and cream cheese mixed together. I believe it tastes like a mixture of rotten onions with sugar and blended in strawberries. My husband says crusty, dirty socks soaked in onions.  Since we tried something new- you should to!

Durian anyone?

  1. I can’t eat peas because they taste “green” to me–don’t think I’ll try any durian fruit!

  2. Mary Ambrosino says

Some people will eat anything lol……

  3. I thought it would’ve tasted like some sweet fruit by the looks of it. But after the description..I’m good..lol. Thanks for sharing:)

  4. Nice review – I know what I will NOT be trying now 😛

  5. this indeed looks different 🙂

  6. Totally thankful for our lack of variety in produce Up here in North Dakota now! No Durian fruit here!

  7. Well, I have never tried durian itself, but one of my Thai girlfriends described it to me (@Oakmonster on twitter). As a kid she loved it but agrees with the smell.

Durian cheesecake does not smell stinky and it is one of best things I have EVER tasted! And I love cheesecake. I have no idea how the chef did it.

  8. OMG – my friend and I go into Whole Foods all the time and pick up new stuff to try. I wonder if that’s the same fruit that we had. We thought we were having an allergic reaction. Both of our tongues swelled up and we couldn’t taste anything for the entire day. YUCK

  9. I’ve already tasted it: my Cambodgian friend made me taste it in a dessert with coconut milk. I thought I was going to puke… I’m generally not difficult when it comes to food: I taste everything, but the durian fruit is a real “No, thanks” and it smells like the trash can.

  10. Um, no thanks. I’m all for trying new stuff, but if I have to plug my nose to get past the smell, it is not getting past my lips!
