American Express Bluebird: The Beginning of my Journey

Bluebird

Walmart and American Express have joined forces to introduce an alternative to traditional banking, the Bluebird card.  Bluebird is not your average pre-paid debit card and over the next month I am going to be sharing our journey using the Bluebird card for everyday spending and special projects that come along during the course of our life.  I’ll report the good things as well as any problems we have along the way, but from the research I’ve done so far on the card it looks like it’s going to be really helpful for our family.

The Application

One of the best things about this card is that there is no application.  Well, not in the traditional sense of the word.  There is no credit check and anyone who “applies” for the card is accepted (with normal limitations such as you must be human, you must be of legal age, etc.).  You can either pick up a temporary card at Walmart for $5 or apply online at bluebird.com for free.  The application process calls for your name, address, and other pertinent information that allows the company to make sure you are a real person.  There is no minimum balance or monthly fees and you can load the card with money either by direct deposit, at Walmart stores, ATMs (they utilize the Moneypass ATMS), or online transfers to get started.

In less than 5 minutes I created my Bluebird account this past week.  Now I am waiting to get my card (7 – 10 days) so that I can put money on it and then I’m on my way.  I can’t wait to try out the “pay bills” feature and to download the app for my smartphone so that I can upload checks and make deposits.  I’m pretty excited to share my experience with you….hope you will check back once I get the card.

What do you think is the first thing I’ll buy?
