Warming Up for Winter: Cozy DIY Home Décor

Warming Up for Winter: Cozy DIY Home Décor

The weather’s getting colder and gusty, icy winds and chilly temperatures can leave your home feeling a little uninviting in the winter months.  Maybe not so much in Florida, but other places for sure. The light and airy feel that your home had in summer now feels stark and cold, and a little home improvement is probably needed to create that cozy winter ambiance that makes you want to snuggle up in front of the fire in your PJs. The good news is, it doesn’t have to cost the earth, and a few little DIY projects will have your home winter-ready in no time at all.

Patchwork Quilt

If you’re a budding seamstress, then start collecting scraps of material with a view to sewing them into a big, cozy throw for your sofa or bed. Shop bought throws can be ridiculously expensive, but you can make your own for next to nothing if you’re prepared to get a little thrifty. Old clothes with interesting textures and patterns, as well as materials picked up from thrift stores and markets, are all perfect for this kind of project. Not only will you be left with a unique piece for your home that will be treasured by your family for years to come, but you’ll also be adding to the coziness of your interiors. My friend, FabGrandma, does some awesome things with quilting.

Fairy Light Fireplace

There’s nothing cozier than fairy lights, so why not get them out a little early this year? They won’t look Christmasy until your stockings are hung up alongside them, but they’ll make your living room feel instantly cozier by creating an ambient, soft glow around your fireplace.

Pine Cone Mirror

Pine cones are a symbol of the changing season, so what better way to welcome it in than using them around the home? Some super-glue, pine cones and an old, boring mirror with a wooden border are the only things you’ll need to create your very own seasonal bespoke mirror. Simply arrange the pine cones around the border and once you’re happy with the arrangement, stick them down.

Heating Things Up

It’s easy enough to cozy-up your home by changing your décor, but it’s useless if there’s still a chilly breeze coming from under the front door. Just before winter kicks in is the perfect time to fit some insulation strips into leaking doors and windows and ensure your central heating system is up to scratch. If there’s a room that gets particularly cold, fit an extra radiator. If you’re on a budget, there are plenty of online tutorials demonstrating how you can do it yourself.

So, all it takes are a few simple steps towards making your home feel ready for winter, and by getting a little thrifty, it’ll cost you next to nothing.
