The University of You: My Graduation

I graduated from high school in 1985, but college just wasn’t something I was important to me at the time. While other kids in my class were preparing to go off to college I was working 40+ hours a week in a sweatshop as a sewing machine operator at Lee Dye in Gloversville, NY. I was paid piece rate and on a good week brought home $110. It was a tough thing to watch all my friends go off to college and make something of their lives while I worked everyday with nearly nothing to show for it.

It wasn’t until I got my first office job a few years later that I knew that one day, somehow, I had to go to college and get a degree. I started out at my local community college taking an accounting course but because I still didn’t fully appreciate the idea of my education I ended up dropping out almost before I began.

Then life took over….

After the birth of my oldest son as I got closer to my 30s I realized it was time to go back to school and I enrolled FT into Valencia College in Orlando. As an adult I truly recognized the importance of my degree and threw myself into my studies graduating Magna Cum Laude with my Associates Degree. After the birth of my second son when I was in my early 40s I realized there was more to be done educationally and went to Kennesaw State University to get my Bachelors Degree. At the age of 42 I graduated with a 3.85/4.0 GPA with honors. Graduation was one of the most memorable things to have happened in my life.

Now as I near my 50s I know my journey is not complete, however I need a University a little different from the traditional schools I went to prior. I’m thinking a school like Western Governors University might be the perfect fit for me! Why?

It’s Less Time, Less Money

For half the cost of other online schools you can get a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree from WGU. Having the opportunity to graduate with far less debt or none at all is something important to me since I already have over $50k in student loan debt.

Better learning experience

The ability to learn anywhere at any time is super important because my schedule is tough and the great flexibility and convenience of WGU really works for me.

Respected and Recognized

Finding a school that has the same accreditation as state universities and private colleges is important because I want to be taken seriously. WGU has received numerous national awards and recognitions as an innovator for low-cost, high quality education!
