Trends in fashion 2014: The tea dress

Wearing a tea dress is the height of the fashion trends at the moment with the official first days of spring upon us. Kate Moss has adorned the cover of Vogue wearing her vintage take on the classic bread and butter look since the 1970s. What is fascinating is how such a dress can translate from the catwalk and Vogue cover to the everyday life of a typical city or country woman. The other special note to make is that the tea dress is a brilliant day to night dress.

Inspiration

The original tea dress is one that has been present since the 1940s and now is back, as with all fashion, having its moment again. The reason is simple as Miuccia Prada’s presents the Miu Miu collection in its finest glory and going through a line of them, there is a draw to their beautiful simplicity with the cut, the garment flow that is flattering for all women’s many contours and silhouettes. Perhaps this may be coined as too traditional but it has a modern slant which makes it so now. Add the subtle padded shoulders with the mid-calf length perfects the befitting encapsulation of that bygone era, making it stand out from all the imitations.

The patterns themselves are reminiscent of that period plus the off salmon color with the swans, swallows with beading, snowdrops and pansies, matching the lipsticked twinkle most becomingly. The very epitome of what staying calm and pulling through was all about. If you’re really keen to try out some new looks with the tea dress in mind check out Motilo for interactive inspiration.

How to wear retro

Show others that you are aware what part of history the dress is from as well as which century you are in: once you have maintained this delicate balance, you are ready but always bear in mind that what is seen on the catwalk does not necessarily translate too well in the normal world of us mortals. You could also get away with the style that is not too girly as the fabric can have a floral pattern with elements of a shirting or a collar and buttons very reminiscent of Katherine Hepburn.

Where they can be found

When buying a tea dress off the high street, choose one element of the style rather than a whole mixture so that it does not appear twee, rather than an unsuccessful duplicate from the catwalk. You can find similar replicas from Asos in the muted color range with a strong shape in the shoulders and a key hole in the middle so it gives a modern angle.

M&S have also brought their tea dress out which is not a typical copy and has a Japanese flower print with shoulder pads and a draped arm area with an open back. Warehouse has a lovely tea dress with gathered material akin to the times with a 1940s pansy print. You’ll need a cardigan for this as it is rather light.

Finish off with the MiuMiu peep toe shoes that are works of Art.

  2. I love the pink dress.

I admit that I adore trends like this. When woman were elegant and classy. Leaving plenty to the imagination they were sexier than ever.
