My mother is a cancer survivor. Her battle was with breast cancer—and she won. She had such a great outlook on her disease and knew it would not win. She fought; she won. It was months after her diagnosis that I even learned she was going through treatment. I am not sure she would have ever told me, but it accidentally slipped out while on the phone one afternoon when I asked her where she was going in the middle of her workday. I lived in Georgia at the time, and she lived in New York, so I only got to talk to her, and we didn’t see each other much. She never told me about having breast cancer because she didn’t want me to worry. My grandmother, her mom, was the same way. When she was diagnosed with cancer, she didn’t mention it to anyone either until her battle was coming to an end.

I work at a skilled nursing facility now, and every day I see firsthand how families struggle with cancer. It breaks my heart because having a loved one with cancer can be so tough. I know not everyone has the attitude my mom had about her illness, and it can be even harder sometimes for the families. Pfizer created This is Living with Cancer as a resource to share inspiring stories and provide people living with cancer and their loved ones with LivingWith™, a free mobile app designed to help manage life with cancer and organize certain important information in one place. It’s resources like these that help people through the things that cancer throws your way. You are not alone.
