The Freshman 15 at Sam’s Club Behind the Scenes of our Video Shoot

If you stopped over from The Brand Ambassador’s post you already know that my oldest son and I shot a video for Sam’s Club’s Freshman 15.  It was a total blast and we were able to get everything important for Ethan to start college.  I want to share with you the “behind the scenes” of the video shoot – just in case you are curious.  It was really pretty interesting to see the final video (http://www3.samsclub.com/backtocollege) because it looks so much better than it felt when we were filming.

First, let me tell you the focus of the video is going off to college and the 15 items freshman can’t do without.  They were really clever with the list because it almost mirrored mine.  The idea is that Sam’s has everything in one place and shopping there will save you time and money – so very true.  Watch the video.  Everything you see us purchase cost less than $1,500.  It was totally amazing.

We arrived at 8:30 am for hair and makeup – just typing that still seems surreal to me.  The makeup artist was a local girl from Atlanta – if you ever need makeup or hair, call her!  She did an incredible job (see video) but here are some pictures of the “getting ready” part of the shoot.  I felt like a rockstar!

Next we went downstairs to the Sam’s floor to get mic’d.  Our host was Brandi, one of the most incredible PR people I have ever worked with….ever.  She even bought us donuts (but I was too nervous to eat).  The cameramen, Nick and Eric, were a blast to work with too.  Ethan especially liked hanging out with them during our breaks and they were more than understanding every time we (Ethan and I) made a mistake.  It was a challenging task because this was more of a documentary style shoot.  We had no lines to remember and no “plan of action” – we just shopped.

The Director, Bob, was also really nice.  He had a vision and helped guide us through it all.  First we shopped and they pretty much followed us around.  Then we concentrated on the items we picked out the first time around and did some close ups of Ethan and I talking about them and checking them out.  Finally, we shopped again and did interviews – right in the middle of the store!

It was really fun.  People kept looking at us to see if they could recognize us as if we were famous.  We weren’t though and no one asked for our autographs, but we both felt like royalty that day.  Nick and Eric performed miracles in the editing room.  I look like I know what I’m talking about when you see the Freshman 15 video.  To be honest, I don’t remember feeling calm and coherent.  I felt like I was babbling and not making any sense.  If I didn’t know better I would have said it was a voice over, but it really wasn’t.

Here is the cast and crew.

Bob, Nick, Me (Lisa), Ethan, Eric, Brandi

Please take some time to check out the Freshman 15 video we did for Sam’s and if you have a child going back to college don’t forget you can find everything you need at Sam’s!  Leave us a comment and tell us what you think!

Disclosure: Sam’s Club provided me with $2000 to shop for my child’s Back to College essentials, in exchange for my time in creating the Back to College video and my post.
