Teen Driver? Not To Worry You Are In Control #DriveSafe

If you watch TV or listen to the radio you have probably seen insurance commercials that offer discounts based on your driving habits. How do they know your driving habits? Well, they send you a little device that you hook up to your vehicles on board computer. It’s actually quite simple and you don’t even have to be a mechanic to figure it out! All you have to do is find the OBD2 port (which is usually located under the dash somewhere on the driver’s side) and plug it in. That all sounds simple enough right?  Well, it’s even easier than it sounds!

This concept of pay according-to-how-you-drive is not new. Insurance companies have already been offering UBI (Usage Based Insurance) programs in the UK. Amazingly, recent studies saw accident rates for teen drivers drop off 20%. Reducing accidents involving US teens has become a priority in my opinion. According to the Center for Disease Control, accidents are actually the leading cause of death in US teenagers and motor vehicle crashes are “a serious health problem.” That is precisely why I wholeheartedly support Sprint. Sprint is providing US insurance companies with the technology they need to cut down on accidents involving teens. The main goal of putting this device out is to help teenagers to improve their driving and reduce accidents. I am sure this is a goal most people can get behind.  However, this device goes one step further than monitoring your driving.  This device deactivates the texting capabilities of your teens smartphone while they are driving.  And unlike the units insurance companies are using this device collects data so that YOU can monitor your teens driving, not the insurance company.

We installed ours in the vehicle last week and we’ve been collecting data and testing it out with our 20 year old son to share our results with you next week.  We’re even going to put together a short video showing you just how easy installation is!  Stay tuned for more…and if you have any questions in particular be sure to leave them in the comments below so that we can get you the answers you need.

Check with your insurance agent and request the SprintM2M OBD2 device.

I love the idea of incapacitating the texting abilities while driving. What a great idea. My question is how does the device know whether you are the driver or a passenger?

  2. I have never heard of this before. I’m interested to learn how it goes since I have a teen who has been driving for only 6 months.
