How Stem Cells Can Save Your Life

Every single cell in your body – all 30 trillion of them – once started out as a stem cell. These stem cells are with us from the time we are in the womb, and change themselves into the necessary cells throughout our body. They become heart cells, lung cells, skin cells and liver cells, along with everything else. Now, thanks to recent scientific developments, we are able to use these stem cells to potentially save thousands of lives.

What Are Stem Cells

As we said, stem cells are certain cells in your body that have the ability to transform into other types of cells. They can become whatever the body needs them to be, whether it be some skin or a new heart. They reside inside our bodies, waiting to be called upon when needed to repair some damage. Think of them as nature’s repair kit for the body.

So if our body has a repair kit, why do we age? Well, the answer to this question is still not quite clear. However, some theories suggest that our body simply runs out of stem cells over the course of our lives, and becomes unable to repair itself. Another theory is that our stem cells go through various changes throughout their lifespan, which make them less effective and less adaptable.

How Can Stem Cells Be Used?

With such a powerful tool at their disposal, scientists have made some very astounding discoveries. By injecting stem cells into damaged portions of the body, the cells can then go to work making repairs. Much progress has been made in directly manipulating the stem cells in order to do what we want – and gains have been made in working with diseases like diabetes, brain disease, cancer, arthritis and spinal cord injuries, among many others.

While there is still much to learn about how stem cells operate, the amount we have learned so far has been staggering. If progress continues to be made in this field, we could someday have cures for some very common ailments, and all that would be required is a collection of your own stem cells.

How To Get Stem Cells?

And this brings us to the question of where do these stem cells come from. You can’t inject yourself with stem cells if you do not have any stored to begin with. Luckily, there are ways that you can store your own stem cells (depending on how old you are) or those of your child.  If you are lucky enough to have your stem cells stored at around the time of your birth, they will be available to you for the rest of your life should you need them.

There are many companies that can extract your stem cells for you, and then store them for future use. If you are an adult, the best time to get it done is now, as your DNA is in a better condition now then it will be in a few years. You can also have the stem cells extracted for children, and the closer you can do it to birth, the better. One of the least invasive ways to have this done – and one of the more affordable ways – is through baby teeth. Baby teeth stem cells are great because they are from a relatively young child – meaning the DNA has had less time to be corrupted – and you can just wait for your child’s tooth to fall out.

Consider Storing Stem Cells Today

Storing stem cells is one of the best things you can do for the future of yourself and your child. Talk to your doctor or visit a stem cell storage clinic in order to get information. We all try to be healthy, but sometimes no matter what you do, you still end up getting sick. Stem cells are a great way to prepare for the future, no matter what it may bring.
