Fresh Florida Shrimp!

It seems like just about everyone these days is trying to eat healthier, exercise more, buy fresh foods, or at least does something to help foster a healthier lifestyle. With all the bike lanes, walking trails, and outdoor activities around these parts, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is pretty easy too. There are more opportunities for physical activity here in Florida than any other place we have lived making it much easier to stay in shape. Being virtually surrounded by water means lots of options when it comes to seafood too and everyone knows how good seafood is for you!

What is your favorite seafood? I love just about everything that moves about under the sea too and crave a variety of sea dwelling delights and have eaten just about everything there is prepared virtually every kind of way. Lobster, crab, oysters, clams, scallops, and sushi have always been a part of my diet and I love it all. My absolute favorite seafood though would be shrimp.

After living down here for over a year I think I have seen more selection in the seafood department than anywhere else I’ve lived. Being almost completely surrounded by water makes it easy for local grocers to stay stocked up with the some of the freshest seafood on the planet. Until recently I had no idea there were so many options when it comes to shrimp either. There are so many different species of shrimp, some of which I had never even heard of, like rock shrimp (which is my new favorite shrimp I discovered at Dixie Crossroads). Rock shrimp tastes like a combination of lobster and shrimp to me and when dipped in melted butter tastes like sunshine and happiness.

Shrimp tastes great no matter how you prepare it and has a naturally delicious taste that goes well with about a billion recipes. Here in Florida, between local restaurants and grocers, you can find virtually every species of shrimp. Next time you pick some up I would like to welcome you to try my favorite shrimp recipe inspired by Pastor Ryan’s Spicy Orange Garlic Shrimp recipe. Feel free to try them both!!!

Spicy Orange and Garlic Florida Shrimp

Ingredients

1 lb. Florida Shrimp (peeled and deveined)

5 Cloves of chopped garlic

3/4 cups of Orange Juice

4 tablespoons of Bourbon Whiskey

2 tablespoons of honey

1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon of Old Bay Seasoning

4 tablespoons of butter

Parmesan Cheese

Directions

Melt butter in frying pan.  Add garlic and once it begins to brown add shrimp into single layer.  Saute on medium heat until shrimp begins to brown.  Flip shrimp to other side.  Once shrimp is completely cooked remove from pan.  Do not scrape off the crispy pieces in the pan. Do not lower heat.

In a bowl whisk orange juice, bourbon, honey, cayenne, and Old Bay Seasoning. Once pan begins to smoke add mixture and whisk the crispy pieces to mix with the orange juice mixture.  Boil until it reduces into a nice sauce to put over shrimp.  Add Parmesan cheese.
