So Good, So Sweet Story: Big Brother

Ten.

That is how many years apart my boys are in age. My oldest son (Ethan) was 10 years old when he finally became a big brother.

Eighteen.

That is how many miscarriages I had before making it happen. My youngest son (James) was a miracle.

A hundred.

That is how many times Ethan asked for a baby brother.

A million.

That is how many times he thanked me when I finally got to tell him his wish was coming true.

This is the So Good, So Sweet Story I want to share with you today. The story about what my oldest son thought about becoming a big brother.

When I remarried my son Ethan was excited about the possibility of becoming a big brother. Since he was pretty much raised growing up with my niece (she is 2 years younger) Ethan always wanted a younger brother to pal around with. Unfortunately due to some health issues having another child did not work out the way we planned.

With every joyous announcement of a pending pregnancy came devastating news of a miscarriage. Year after year Ethan got older and older with no younger brother to play with and love. Finally, when my pregnancy with James passed the critical point Ethan was careful not to get his hopes up. I learned later that he was really excited about it, but didn’t want to let us know so we wouldn’t feel bad if it didn’t work out.

At school, however, Ethan was sharing the news with anyone and everyone. He was prouder than proud and really happy. He was so happy I found out later that he entered a county wide competition called Reflections and won first place for the theme…I’m happy when…. He entered a collage entitled, “When my mommy told me she was having my baby brother.”

It was one of the most sweetest, unexpected and happiest times of my life knowing how much my son loved his unborn brother.
