Seven Odd New Year’s Traditions

Not everyone rings in the New Year with drunken smooches as they watch dropping balls, fruits, and animals. Around the world there are some pretty unusual New Year’s Traditions, here are 7 of our favorites.

1. Some people in Romania gather around and try to hear animals talk.

2. In Panama people make dolls of famous people and politicians and set them on fire.

3. Some South Africans get together and throw their furniture out of the window.

4. There are at least a few people in Siberia that grab trees and dive into a frozen lake with them.

5. In North Carolina people celebrate New Year’s by lowering a possum over a noisy crowd.

6. Some people in the Philippines will open up all the windows, doors, and cabinets and run around the house at midnight shutting them all.

7. People in Denmark kick the New Year off by smashing plates on their neighbor’s front porch leaving behind piles of crockery.

All around the world people will soon be gathering together engaging in activities that represent their hope and desire for a new beginning. We all do things differently but hope and joy feel the same.
