It’s amazing how the smallest whiff of something can trigger memories and emotions.
The smell of the ocean.
When I was a little girl growing up in NY State the closest I ever got to a palm tree at the beach was on television so when we went to Fort Lauderdale and I got to experience so many new things it’s no wonder the smell of the ocean floods me with precious memories.
It was my very first time riding on a train. My mom, stepdad, and I actually rode a train from NY to FL. I remember bits and pieces of the ride. I remember eating in the dining car and visiting the very last car to see the end of the train. I also remember when the A/C unit on the train broke down when we got into FL and how hot and uncomfortable it was.
I remember posing for the photo above before we left our hotel, The Yankee Clipper, to go for a tour on The Jungle Queen. I also remember that our hotel had a pool bar and at the bar you could see in the pool so when I decided to sneak into the deep end while my dad went to the bar I was shocked that he came running and screaming my name. How could he have known?
I remember our family enjoying the beautiful ocean and beaches of the Florida coast in the early 70s and it makes me smile. Not long after this trip my parents got a divorce and therefore the smell of the ocean truly holds a valued memory of days gone by.
