Random Thoughts: Renting vs. Buying

Random Thoughts: Renting vs. Buying

Family with house for sale

I swore when we moved to Florida I wasn’t going to move for a while, but we have been here just over 2 years now and I have the itch for change.  Although I thought about buying a home last year now I’m really rethinking it.  I can’t seem to stay in one place long enough, let alone make a 30 year commitment.  Times are changing and neighbors can go to seed in a matter of one or two years, let alone 30!

Even with this new thought of possibly renting instead of buying I see I’m not in the majority. Many new home builders including Kolter Homes, GL Homes, Pulte and others continue to build as the demand for new home buyers appears to be surpassing supply.  I’ve also heard that Kolter Homes has a new mega community in the works for Palm Beach Gardens. I love these community based neighborhoods.  My mom just moved into one in NC and she loves it. They have what seems like a self-contained city inside a gated community.  It’s private, yet not secluded entirely.  I think it’s definitely a possibility for us as they seem to maintain their value longer than other homes.

So, do you live in a community?  Have you noticed any decline?  I’m so on the fence…rent, own, community, etc. I think if we decide to buy it will have to be in a community setting otherwise we will continue to roam the Earth as vagabonds. There are pros to renting and there are pros to purchasing.  I think the best of both worlds is renting a home inside a community…. Let me know what worked for you….what do you suggest?
