Quiet Oasis: Get Rid of The Noise Pollution At Home

After a long day at work, you probably have one thing in mind: to have some peace and quiet at home. Unfortunately for some people, going home may mean having to deal with so much noise – the constant fighting of neighbors, dogs barking, honking cars on the busy street, and the list could go on. In other words, noise pollution can destroy the paradise experience inside your home.

Noise at Home Affects Our Health

Some people have gotten used to the noise pollution in their homes, but this situation can affect our health. For starters, not having quality sleep can definitely take its toll on a person’s health, which may lead to being unproductive at work.

Research has shown that having less sleep has a negative impact on health. The number of hours that a person needs depends on the individual’s age.  Here are some age-specific categories and the recommended number of hours of sleep every day.

  • Newborns (0-3 months): 14-17 hours
  • Infants (4-11 months): 12-15 hours
  • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours
  • Preschool children (3-5 years): 10-13 hours
  • School-age children (6-13 years): 9-11 hours
  • Teenagers (14-17 years): 8-10 hours
  • Young Adults (18-25 years): 7-9 hours
  • Adults (26-64 years): 7-9 hours
  • Older Adults (65+ years): 7-8 hours

Living in a fast-paced environment has prevented many of us to get the appropriate amount of sleep that we need, but adding noise into the equation makes it worse. Therefore, we all need to find ways to make our homes quiet and audibly comfortable.

How to Create A Quiet Space

Being aware of how you can minimize unfavorable sounds can greatly benefit everyone in your home. For instance, replacing your old windows with soundproof windows may be a good investment. Although this kind of window may cost you more than ordinary ones, the huge benefit of significantly reducing noise at home is something that cannot be disregarded.

Apart from implementing a permanent solution to the noise coming from the outside, you may also use the following techniques to protect yourself from noise pollution at home:

Wear earplugs

This quick solution involves protecting yourself from the noise. Although using earplugs doesn’t sound like a permanent solution, at least you can prevent noise pollution from affecting you, while you’re looking for a more long-lasting answer to your noise dilemma.

Use a rug or wall-to-wall carpeting

Wooden floors may create squeaking sounds, especially when people walk on them. To prevent this kind of noise, you may want to consider using a rug or installing wall-to-wall carpeting to minimize this type of sound.

Close the windows

There is a great benefit in having to let fresh air into your home. However, if you live in a noisy neighborhood — where there is a construction project in progress, a train station nearby, or airplanes passing over your home – then closing your windows will definitely reduce the sound.

Of course, choosing the right window to shield outside noise should be one of your top priorities.

When you have solved your noise pollution in your house, you can have the opportunity to spend a relaxing weekend and enjoy your smart home gadgets. Everyone deserves to enjoy peace and quiet inside the house, and addressing the noise can help you achieve that oasis of a home that you’ve always dreamed about.
