My Grandmother and Amazing Women Everywhere

“SCA believes that everyone should have the opportunity to live life to the fullest, and we are committed to creating value for people and nature.”

I never realized just how amazing a woman my grandmother was growing up. I knew that when my grandfather disappeared and left her to raise two little kids (my mother and uncle) that she pulled up her big girl panties and worked her booty off as a nurse to support everyone and to pay off the debts he left behind.  I knew that there wasn’t a single person who ever had a negative thing to say about her and I knew that she was a woman full of Faith and Love.  She taught me to be the person I am today by setting an example and she has inspired me to be the best me I can be.

There are women everywhere who have a positive impact on others and that’s why SCA launched Amazing Women Everywhere, a digital photo mosaic to celebrate these women.  Whether it’s your mom, sister, aunt, friend, or grandmother there is probably someone in your life that is an inspiring woman. The Team SCA and the amazing women photo mosaic are waiting to hear about the woman in your life that inspires you. I submitted my grandmother and soon she will become one of the many women to make up this “Awemosaic“!

ABOUT TEAM SCA

The Team

Team SCA is the first truly professional all-female team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race and includes 13 women (ranging in age from 28-40) from all over the world – including three Americans, Sara Hastreiter (age 30, from Wyoming) and Sally Barkow (age 34, from Wisconsin), and Sophie Ciszek (age 30, dual citizen of US/Australia). Other amazing members of Team SCA include Dee Caffari (GBR), the only woman to have sailed solo both ways around the world (both east and west); two moms, Abby Ehler (GBR and AUS) and Carolijn Brouwer (NED), who both have young sons; and Elodie-Jane and Justine Mettraux, the first two sisters to sail this race.

These women are truly inspiring!  They have been training for nearly two years in Lanzarote, Spain. Now they are competing in leg 5, sailing for roughly 20 days between New Zealand and Brazil. You can follow their journey via their blog and social media!

The Race

Known as the toughest offshore sailing race in the work, The Volvo Ocean Race goes back to 1973 and is considered the Everest of racing. The race lasts for nine months, covering 39,379 nautical miles (almost two laps around the equator). It started in Alicante, Spain in October 2014 and stops in nine countries around the world before it finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden in June 2015. The race will make one stop in North America: Newport, RI, arriving between May 5-9, 2015.

The camaraderie of Team SCA and their challenge in the Volvo Ocean Race leads me to believe that these women are a perfect example of awesomeness!
