How to Ensure You Have the Best Night’s Sleep Ever

Sleep can sometimes be elusive. If you have young kids, restless pets, it’s too hot or too cold in the bedroom, or if you are ill, you may have trouble sleeping. In some cases, there isn’t a lot you can do about it, but if your issues are related to your bed or bedroom, read on for some helpful tips to ensure you have a wonderful night’s sleep.

How Old is Your Bed?

Is your bed older than the Ark? Does your mattress sag in the middle? Many sleep issues are related to older beds and mattresses. Most mattresses are not designed to last more than eight years, so it is worth upgrading to a new bed if you regularly wake up with a backache or you toss and turn every night.

Look for a bed that suits your sleep style, weight, and budget. Some people prefer a hard mattress but others like a soft mattress that molds around their body like a glove. You can buy a memory foam mattress topper to prolong the life of a bed, but sometimes, it’s better just to go the extra mile and buy a new bed.  If this sounds like a good idea, check out some reviews on Life with Lisa. Once you have a shortlist, head over to your nearest bed store and test a few mattresses out. It’s always better to lie down on a mattress before you buy to make sure it suits you and your partner.

Bedding

Luxury bedding is worth its weight in gold. It may seem like an unnecessary expense, but good quality cotton sheets will keep you comfortable in bed. Cotton wicks moisture away from the skin. On a hot night, this is very important. Buy quality cotton sheets and your sleep should improve almost immediately. My personal favorite is by Sleep Number.

Our grandparents didn’t have quilts or duvets. They layered blankets and sheets. This is actually a much better way of dressing a bed, as it allows you to adjust covers according to smaller increments of temperature. But if you prefer the convenience of a duvet, buy a seasonal adjustable duvet, so you can swap out the thicker portion of it when the weather warms up.

Room Temperature

A hot bedroom is not conducive to sleep. The warmer it is, the harder it will be to fall asleep. Make sure your bedroom has adequate air-conditioning and heating. Fit blinds or drapes to keep the hot sun out in summer, and cold drafts in winter. A ceiling fan will keep the air circulating on hot summer nights.

Create a Relaxing Vibe

Bedrooms are for relaxation and sleep. Don’t have a TV in your bedroom and leave your technology at the bedroom door. Switch off smartphones an hour before bed so your brain can wind down and prepare for sleep. Personally, I haven’t found anything more relaxing than the Somneo sleep and wake-up light. There are two options for getting a perfect sleep. I love the natural sunset simulator with soft rain noise.

The right scents can also help you sleep better. Aromatherapy oils such as lavender, roman chamomile, and sandalwood oil help to create a calm, relaxing environment. Use scented candles or add a few drops to your bedding.
