Living with arthritis can be difficult as symptoms increase over time. Most people are aware of this disease but don’t know very much about it. Arthritis is a degenerative disease that affects millions of Americans and results in pain and loss of mobility for many.

There are two major types of arthritis: osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that typically results from overuse of joints but is not just a problem for the elderly or obese. Athletes also suffer from osteoarthritis as well as average people that participate in physically demanding sports. When the cartilage in joints wears out it is usually quite painful and usually limits physical activity. Rheumatoid arthritis is a little different than osteoarthritis as it is not cause by repetitive movement or injury to joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto immune disease and is usually much more painful. What happens in auto immune diseases is your body’s immune system mistakenly targets healthy cells in your body because it thinks they don’t belong. Treatments for both types of arthritis vary depending on the diagnosis and severity of the disease.

Pain is usually what brings people into the doctor and is typically managed with prescription and over the counter medications. Massage therapy can also benefit arthritis sufferers. While therapeutic massage won’t cure arthritis and is not a treatment it can be beneficial nonetheless. By relaxing the muscles and tendons that are attached to joints pain can be temporarily reduced. The act of massage in itself can also overcome pain signals to some degree and lessen symptoms.

As a former Massage Therapy Instructor and massage therapist I have a lot of experience with arthritis and have seen it benefit many people. I also have family members that suffer from arthritis including my wife and even myself. I have experienced the benefits of massage firsthand and through those who have been on my table.

For the past 3 years Massage Envy has partnered with the arthritis foundation through their Healing Hands for Arthritis program (HH4A).
