Growing Up: What Do You Want To Be?

Growing Up: What Do You Want To Be?

Seems like when I was young I thought about this all the time. My earliest memories of what career would suit me always had to do with right and wrong.  Whereas most girls of my time wanted to grow up and be a princess or a nurse or a wife and mother I always wanted to be a police officer or a DEA officer or maybe even a lawyer. What is it that influences children to make these career choices?  I didn’t know anyone in those fields, but still I wanted to ‘bust the bad guys’.

Even into adulthood I wanted to work for the FBI as a forensic psychologist but I was devastated to learn that due to my age I wasn’t going to be able to fulfil that dream.  So what was I to do?  I decided that maybe I would be a good lawyer.  I learned that the most knowledgeable lawyers in Florida are the lawyers In Palm Beach and who the heck wouldn’t want to live there?  Unfortunately that never panned out either.

Today I’m self-employed.  I don’t work as a police officer (although I did go to the Kissimmee Civilian Police Academy in the 90s).  I don’t work as a DEA officer, a forensic psychologist or a lawyer.  I work in social media.  I don’t get to bust any bad guys.  I landed in a direction I never thought I would go, but when I think about it…it’s a perfect fit for me.  I love what I do and I’m not sorry for the choices I’ve made.  I do, however, get a bit excited when I see a bunch of police action and my curiosity kicks in.  I wonder how many other people never obtain their childhood career goals. Did you?
