Florida Landscaping and Gardening: Mulch 101

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Scotts Miracle-Gro. All opinions are 100% mine.

Now that Spring is here it’s time to get prepping your Florida yard and gardens.  We actually started just over a month ago prepping our soil and setting up all the gardening supplies we needed for the season.  Since this was our first Spring here we had a lot of work to do.  When we bought the house the yard was as overgrown as I am tall…some weeds were over 6 feet!  We decided to plant a large garden in the backyard becuase sustainable gardening is important to us.

Here is what it looked like half way through planting.

Working Florida soil can be challenging and using a good mulch is very important.  However, many people are currently using Cypress mulch in Florida but don’t realize how bad that is for our Cypress trees.  A much better choice is Scotts Florida Select Natural Eucalyptus Mulch.  Not only does it help support our local economy (comes from Florida) but the Eucalyptus is sustainability-harvested and plantation grown.  It considered a renewable resource because it grows four times faster than Cypress.

Why do people use mulch in Florida?

Eucalyptus mulch prevents weeds naturally and helps retain moisture as well as moderate temperature.  These are important factors in Florida where it’s extremely hot and dry a lot of the time and since the soil is sandy in most places maintaining moisture is really important.

We used the mulch in our garden this Spring and after a few weeks our garden looked like this….

Now we are working on our landscaping and flower garden.  Our goal is to have lush lawn and beautiful flowers and palms.

What do you think of this?

I think it would be perfect for Scotts Nature Scapes mulch

Looks beautiful. You must have a green thumb.

  2. What plants are you using for landscaping? And what type of grass did you decide to seed and why? I need to work on my Florida lawn and landscape and any advice or tips would be so welcome. Wish you had another post about the lawn/landscaping.
