Garden Chair Planter

I spend a lot of time on Pinterest with my Aspire Switch 11 looking for ideas of things to do that will make my house feel more like a home.  It is amazing the things you can find on there and the ideas they inspire.  A few months ago when hubby and I were driving down the road I saw something in someone’s trash that made me yell, STOP!  Yes, I’m a trash rummager from way back because as you may not know, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.  Anyway, I saw two old wooden chairs out at the side of the road along with the trash and I immediately had a flash in my mind of an adorable Garden Chair Planter I remembered from Pinterest.   I decided to seize the idea and made James jump out and throw them in the back of his truck.  Fast forward three months…

Depending on the chair you will be using you may or may not need some of these materials.  The chairs we found were missing seats so we had to make one with some scrap wood we had laying around the house.  James used his jigsaw and cut a circle to fit my pot for me (because he likes me like that).

Materials Needed:

  • Chair
  • Plant pot
  • Drill
  • Jigsaw or small handsaw
  • Wood glue for repairs (if needed)
  • Wood (if needed)
  • Paint
  • Paint brush

Herbs:

  • Sage
  • Rosemary
  • Mint
  • Oregano
  • Cilantro

If your chair is missing a seat you might want to get a piece of scrap wood and make a hole in the center with a jigsaw that will fill your pot.  We used a pot with a slight lip so that it would hold itself in place.  Our chair had seen better days so we also used some wood glue and a clamp to repair a broken piece of the foot rail.  Once the chair was sturdy (it was already painted that awesome blue color) we painted the wood for the seat a mint green color and screwed it in place.  Finally, we added the pot.

What makes this Garden Chair Planter a bit different is we decided to plant herbs and make it a functional herb garden. We priced the potted herb gardens at the store and realized it was nearly half the price to make our own and the benefit was we got to choose what to add to the pot.  We picked some of our favorite herbs including rosemary, sage, oregano, mint, and cilantro.  We replanted in some garden soil and added a personal touch of a homemade plant marker made from a wooden spoon I stained and painted the word “herbs” on.

How do you think it came out?
