A watch is to a man what diamonds are to a woman, and that’s not to say that there aren’t exceptions, but a man’s watch symbolizes his wealth and power. Now there are more men who wear jewelry  but not much, and it tends to be the same, day in, day out. This is why a watch should be an investment, one that will last the years and maybe even outlive you, Pulp Fiction style.

What You Should Look For

Whatever your budget, you should look for a watch that is made with high quality craftsmanship as well as looking beautiful and fulfilling the functions that you need. A Rolex, Omega (both favorites of James Bond in different reincarnations), Cartier, or Tag Heuer would all be excellent choices for someone with a large pocket, but we don’t all have large pockets.

Vintage Watches

Be sure to buy from a reputable dealer such as the International Watch and Jewelry Guild for example, and ensure that you see a certificate of authenticity so you know what you’re getting is real, and can add value. Look for brands that you know- just like when you buy a car, you need to do your research.

A Watch That Will Stand the Test of Time

You’re looking for quality of craftsmanship rather than anything else, so look for something simple- no gadgetry that will look dated when technology advances- and go for mechanical rather than quartz as it takes more skill to create a mechanical watch.

For Formal Occasions

Understated, classic and stylish- your watch should be just like your suit. Don’t go for anything too bulky or flashy, stick to simple elegance. No bells or whistles here, just a plain face and a leather strap, such as the Bering Men’s Watch 11139-402 from Bering Watches UK.

For The Office

At the office you can make more of a statement with your watch. It needs to be durable to survive those everyday knocks. It can be chunky, but sleek. You can invest in a few gadgets if you so wish, whatever you feel will be useful, but make sure it goes well with the style you have to wear for work, whether that’s a suit or a more casual jeans and a shirt. Think chrome, with a metal strap.

For Casual Drinks

The weekend watch needs to be utilitarian, durable but stylish. A canvas or leather strap, a chronograph (a watch and stopwatch combined) perhaps. It can be big and attention seeking- but don’t go over the top. It should look good with a polo shirt and jeans.

For Sports

A watch that should be able to endure anything, it needs shock resistance and waterproofing- or at least water resistance. There are different watches that cater to different sports, such as swimming, running or golfing.
