A Quick Hike Around Split Oak Loop

A Quick Hike Around Split Oak Loop

Overcast days in Florida are perfect for hiking. When the sun isn’t baking your brains out you don’t have to bring as much water and hiking is a breeze. Today I decided to take a quick hike around Split Oak Loop which is a trail in the Split Oak Forest Wildlife and Environmental Area.  The trails are very clearly marked and numbered so if you download the map, navigation is a breeze. There weren’t any washed out areas on the trail which is a plus this time of year and makes it perfect for running. The sandy topsoil is packed down almost everywhere so its a pretty easy trek.

There were a few birds here and there but the day seemed to belong to the armadillos. I must have seen five or so and got a few pictures of two. It seemed like every mile or so I was either hearing a few scratching around in the underbrush between the palmettos or spotting one hopping across the road.

How many trails do YOU have under your belt?

Comments

  1. Great photos. It’s been years since I hiked the Split Oak Loop, so thanks for the reminder that I need to get out there again before the sun and heat become unbearable.

  2. This post speaks to my heart. Hiking is so much a part of who I am that I get withdrawals in the winter because I can’t get out there. I have more trails under my belt than I can count, but so many more that I’m dying to experience!

  3. Oh my goodness your pictures are gorgeous. I’ve seen an armadillo only once in my life and you’ve captured him/her beautifully. What a serene location.

  4. What great photos Lisa! I’ve lived in Orlando my whole life and haven’t been to this park. We may have to take the kids there!

  5. I LOVE your photos!! Split Oak Loop looks like a fantastic place to hike! I only walk one trail (with a friend) by my house. It’s paved but we still see deer, snakes, birds and bunnies!

  6. My family loves hiking trails. We’ve got too many under our belts to count.

Your photos are BEAUTIFUL!! Some could be postcards! That armadillo is awesome too!

  7. What a great hike! You saw lots of wildlife and some amazing nature views! 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

  8. These pictures of nature are absolutely beautiful. I can’t decide which is my favorite the Oak Trees, the Red Cardinal or the Armadillo.

  9. Looks like an absolutely stunning place. Somewhere that you could get lost in for hours.
