6 Tips to Fight Dry Skin This Winter with Organic Moisturizer

Baby, it’s cold outside. And that likely means that your skin is dry and in dire need of a nourishing moisturizer to get you through those chilly winter months.

Colder temperatures require a rich, hydrating moisturizer that keeps the harsh elements out while locking moisture in. However, even an ideal winter moisturizer needs a little help to properly do its job. Grab a cup of hot cocoa and check out our 6 tips to help nourish dry skin this winter with organic moisturizer.

  1. Select a rich, hydrating moisturizer

This may seem obvious, but your summer go-to moisturizer is likely not going to cut it during the winter. When it comes to choosing an organic winter moisturizer, look for one that is rich, protective, and hydrating. Key ingredients for hydration include aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, honey, and antioxidants, while rich avocado, coconut, and olive oils create a barrier on the surface of your skin to keep moisture in.

  1. Don’t skip the SPF

We lied. There should be one key similarity between your summer and winter moisturizers: SPF. Cold, gloomy weather doesn’t mean that the sun is any less powerful. Make sure your moisturizer is formulated with a good SPF to protect your skin from the sun’s UV rays all year round.

  1. Try an oil-based organic moisturizer

We know that some of you are still skeptical about trying an oil-based moisturizer–but seriously, it can be a game changer for winter dry skin! Applying a good facial oil to damp skin can work serious magic. When properly applied, organic facial oils can be incredibly potent for restoring and nourishing your skin. Oils tend to deliver nutrients to the deeper layers of the skin, keeping it hydrated. Make sure to apply it to damp skin to increase absorption!

  1. Exfoliate Before Moisturizing

Kudos if you’ve already locked down a good winter moisturizer/oil. However, unless you’re regularly exfoliating, even the best moisturizer isn’t going to properly work its magic. Without exfoliation, your products just cling to the surface layer of old, dead skin cells. When you exfoliate, you slough off old skin cells, which helps your skin better absorb your winter moisturizer.

  1.  Don’t overdo the face wash

Clean skin is important, and we’ll never tell you otherwise. However, too much cleansing can strip and dry out winter skin. Cleansing your skin in the evening with an oil-based cleanser helps wash away the pollution of the day, without stripping the skin of beneficial oils. Be sure to use a gentle natural makeup remover daily as well. However, skip the morning cleanse and just wipe your skin with a good toner before applying your winter moisturizer.

  1. Use lukewarm water for cleansing

Another tip on cleansing (and you thought it was so simple). Never use hot water. It strips the skin of good oils and impairs its barrier function, both of which lead to dryness. Cleanse using lukewarm water to help your skin stay hydrated and balanced in the winter months.

We hope these tips keep your skin nourished and hydrated all winter long!
